Got a note from the good folks at Home Resource that they’re looking for artists to contribute to their silent auction as part of this year’s annual Spontaneous Construction event. SponCon is awesome fun — I’ve participated every year I think — and in addition to having the opportunity to build something wacky, I love nothing better than catfighting with all the other earth-lovin’ peaceniks to get the last bid in on silent auction items.
Just kidding. I actually get really frustated every year by the silent auction because of all the folks who sneak their bids in at the last second (or, on more than one occasion, after the auction is supposedly over)…
…But that’s hardly unique to SponCon’s silent auction (I’d call it an epidemic around here), and really an issue for another day and another post. Like I said though, SponCon rocks; I’ve already got my team together for this year’s contest (which happens on Sept. 26; click here for info), and we are gonna be awesome. Or, at least, we’re gonna finish our project, unlike last year.
ANYWAY! I keep digressing.

One made his career playing by all the rules. One made his career by breaking all the rules.
One wears a bracelet in honor of a little girl with leukemia. One wears freaky colored contacts in order to scare little girls.
One has an endorsement deal with Sketchers shoes. One couldn’t get an endorsement deal if he begged for it. [Read More...]

He of the rooster-do, aka rapper Tech N9NE, is once again coming to the Wilma. I was just talking with a fellow newsroom music-head about our mutual bafflement at the continued support for this guy in this town (his shows at the Wilma regularly sell out). This despite Tech N9NE’s complete lack of a major hit song or album.
Sure, the guy recently surpassed one million albums sold over the course of his career — no mean feat. But he’s been performing for nearly a quarter century now.
By contrast, tickets to next week’s gig at the Wilma by 2008 “American Idol” winner David Cook — who recently set the all-time record for the most songs in the Billboard Hot 100 at the same time, and who has sold more than a million copies of one album alone — still haven’t sold out.
And I must admit, my bafflement is shaded by annoyance. I just don’t get why anyone would give a crap about this foul-mouthed guy whose music pretty much consists of boastful, women-as-objects, haters-be-banished diatribes set to drum machine beats we all heard back in the 80s. It’s boring, it’s tired, and it surely can’t make you a better person to spend time listening to it.
*sigh*
If anyone out there feels like schooling me on what I’m missing, I’m all ears.
In the meantime, if you care to know about show details, click through for the press release… [Read More...]

I received a press release today stating that in the 2009-2010 season, 90 American orchestras will present 179 world premieres of new music.
The list of orchestras presenting those new works range from youth orchestras, to tiny community orchestras, to the most respected professional ensembles in the country.
Missing from the list: Any orchestra in the state of Montana. This seems a rotten shame to me, particularly considering the wealth of talented composers living in Montana… [Read More...]

Well, vacation to Portland this week wasn’t quite as leisurely as I’d expected, and as a result I didn’t get a chance to post up more than a couple bits about bands playing this year. And now, Total Fest is one day away. So, sorry about that. You’ll have to find out for [...]

Despite the fact that Electric Dandelion is a Missoula band, I’ve never to my knowledge seen ‘em. Actually, I’m not even altogether sure who’s in the band. I know, it’s supposed to be my job to keep a finger on the pulse of local bands….But I haven’t happened to catch the band at any local shows; and for their part, they’ve never sent me anything in the way of a show announcement or CD or anything. It’s probably a sign that I’m growing old and out of touch. [Read More...]

For awhile I couldn’t stop reading PassiveAggressiveNotes.com. I still love it; but lately, ThereIFixedIt.com is giving it a run for its money.
There’s even a great suggestion for what to do with your least favorite music CDs!

The Alpine Theatre Project in Whitefish is offering discounted tickets to its current production of “The World Goes ‘Round,” to stimulate attendance….er, wait, to help you save money. Or both. I’ve not seen the show; but at an event in Hamilton on Wednesday, I spoke with a woman who attended the show earlier this week, and she was almost breathless in her praise. Click through for details, via ATP’s press release; note that, although I just got this release, the discounted price lasts only through this weekend…. [Read More...]

This coming week, as we careen toward Total Fest (which takes place Thurs-Sat, 8/20-22), I thought I’d spotlight a few of the bands I personally find interesting in this year’s lineup. This isn’t at all exhaustive; if you want to know about every one of the 50-some bands playing T-Fest this year, you’d do well to study up at the Total Fest blog.
First up, I’m gonna run with the recommendation of fellow Missoulian newsie Cory Walsh, who turned me on to Seattle’s Wildildlife. [Read More...]
