Local rappers take over the Wilma this Sunday

When it comes to locally produced hip-hop shows, Missoula audiences have become accustomed to something akin to rap karaoke: One dude on the stage barking rhythmically into the microphone as pre-programmed beats bump in the background. So the main thing that Ryan Bradshaw, aka the emcee Rbiz, wants you to know about this Sunday’s show at the Wilma Theatre is this: It may be all local acts, but it’s unlike all other local hip-hop shows you’ve seen in the past.

“We really want to raise the bar of how a live performance should be; too many guys just stand on stage, there’s no production, there’s no stage props,” says Bradshaw. “Hip-hop can be boring if you’re not adding to it. We want people to leave this show thinking, ‘I can’t wait til the next one.’”

To those ends, Bradshaw and his fellow producers of this weekend’s concert, dubbed “Tha Takeover,” have roped in a range of non-rapping collaborators including set designers from the University of Montana, live instrumental musicians, choregraphed dancers, and even a chorus led by Peter Park (founder of local choir Dolce Canto).

Taking turns on the mic will be a list of long-time local rappers. In addition to Rbiz himself (who will perform with longtime collaborator Jaeo), the program will include sets by Filth and Foul, Ambedext, Supaman, and Conceit.

The whole thing goes down Sunday, Oct. 10, at the Wilma Theatre. Tickets are $10, available at the door or in advance at Rockin Rudy’s.
