I’m almost afraid to say anything negative about Oakland-based band Antioquia. After all, their latest album is called, “My Piano ate the front page of the San Francisco Chronicle.” I’d hate to see what it could do to this defenseless little blog.
Fortunately, there’s little to criticize about these four oddballs, whose well of inspiration seems to be located in a colorfully strange land halfway between Shakedown Street and Sesame Street.
Building on an imbalanced frame of herky-jerky rhythms and mixed time-signatures, the band constructs elaborate musical oddities that you’ll probably never hear on pop radio.
For proof, you can download the band’s entire new album at their Web site; the cost is whatever you wanna pay, down to nothing if you’re that much of a cheapskate.
It’ll all surely make for a long, strange trip when the band hits the Top Hat next Tuesday, July 27.
That show also features the return of Yo Mama’s Big Fat Booty Band, an Ashville, N.C.-based jam band that has played around here more than once. All added up, it should make for a fun show.
