This Saturday, Nov. 7, the Metropolitan Opera’s “Live in HD” series continues at the Roxy Theatre in Missoula with Puccini’s last and biggest opera, “Turandot.”
I, for one, can’t wait to see it.
Even among Puccini’s many great works, “Turandot” stands out in my mind. The first act in particular seems nigh perfect: It’s basically one long melody, fitted perfectly to a tight dramatic structure, that culminates in an intensely powerful ending.
Then there’s “Nessun Dorma,” the tune that made Paul Potts a household name.
I’ve never actually seen “Turandot,” I’ve only listened to it — a gazillion times — on CD. I know I’ve missed a lot, though; particularly as done by the Metropolitan Opera, this is an opera of gargantuan theatrical proportions.
If you have any interest in opera, see this. You won’t regret it.
Saturday’s screening takes place at 11 a.m., with a repeat screening on Nov. 14 at 7:30. Check Morrisproductions.org for ticket info.
