Music, art, and life in Missoula

Foster film fundraiser

November 22nd, 2009 · No Comments

Missoula documentary film company Porch Productions aims, through its work, to “give voice to the voiceless.” This coming week, the small company will turn to some of the boldest voices in Missoula to raise money for its next project.

In an event at the Badlander on Tuesday night, Porch Productions will present “Fusion,” a hip-hop dance party featuring an array of local rappers, djs, breakdancers, and graffiti artists. The event aims to raise money toward the next stage of production of “From Place to Place,” a feature-length documentary that follows the lives of six people who have “aged out” of Montana’s foster care system.

Founded by Missoula residents Paige Williams and Matt Anderson, Porch Productions has produced two documentaries to date, most recently “Mississippi Queen,” about a lesbian woman’s relationship with her religious parents. That film won several awards including Best Documentary at the Delta Film Festival and the Audience Award at the Indie Grits Film Festival.

Its current project, however, is its most ambitious to date, following six subjects for an entire year as they try to settle into adult life after growing up in a system marked by “multiple placements, multiple therapists, failed permanency, loss of family relationships, and aging out,” according to Anderson.

“These six young adults humanize the impact,” added Anderson. “They also demonstrate the urgency for reform.”

Much of the film’s production work has already commenced. Tuesday’s event will raise money toward the second stage of production, and to match a grant from the First Interstate Bank Foundation.

Performers at the event include MCs Pallas, Frodie, O.T. Koshir, and DJ Dice; a breakdance battle featuring Whitney Tuxbury and Adrian Casados; a DJ battle featuring DJ Mermaid, Milkcrate Mechanic, and AudioBrad; and graffiti artists painting murals live throughout the event. Admission is $7 prior to 11 p.m.; $3 from 11 p.m.-2 a.m. For more information, visit www.PorchProductions.net.
