In a corner of the MAM’s Carnegie Gallery, Jonathan Marquis dances between a computer printer and an array of images laid out on the floor. He has created a kind of cocoon for himself here, surrounded by abstractly stained canvases, a computer and printer, and an array of paints.
“I figured I’d just bring my studio to the gallery,” he says. “That way whatever I get inspired to do, I can do it.”

By 9:31 a.m., most of the artists are already set up at tables arrayed around the MAM’s main Carnegie Gallery. It’s dead silent, but for the strains of classic rock wafting from speakers in the ceiling.
Dirk Lee sits at a long table, painting on a small, square piece of fabric.
“It’s a gun-cleaning patch,” he explains. “I found a stack of them a few months ago, and I’ve been doodling on them since then.”

At 8:49 a.m., artists Jonathan Marquis and Ramsay Hay arrive at the Missoula Art Museum, bearing nothing but a single shoebox. They’re the first to arrive for today’s “Artini: Auction – In Your Face” event, in which ten local artists create original works in the course of one day in the museum, and then auction those works off this same evening.
Marquis, however, is hardly taking a minimalist approach in his one-day art challenge.
“I need a cart,” he says as he ascends the stairs in the MAM’s atrium. “The rest of my stuff is still outside.” [Read More...]
