A conversation with Red Green

In times like these, America needs Red Green. The Canadian comedian and star of the long-running PBS series, “The Red Green Show,” Green has won over scores of us south-of-the-northern-border yokels with his patchwork brand of homespun advice (“If life gives you lemons, throw ‘em into a quart of vodka”), pithy philosophies (“Men are like gas, they take up the space available”), and most of all, fix-it tutorials.

In his new book, “How to Do Everything,” Green explores plenty of the latter, offering do-it-yourself ideas for how to fix a draughty window using mice, how to fix squeaky floorboards with a whoopee cushion, and how to lift the engine out of a car using just a nine volt cordless drill, clothesline pulleys and his famously favored fix-all, duct tape.

On Saturday, Green will appear at the Montana Theatre on the UM campus as part of his current “Wit and Wisdom” tour. I caught up with him by phone earlier this week to talk about the life experiences that brought him to where he is today, and the winding road that brings him here this weekend. [Read More...]

National Day of Unplugging? Not me…

In case nobody Tweeted you the news yet, today is the second annual National Day of Unplugging. Organized by Reboot, a network of “young thought-leaders and tastemakers” who aim to rejuvenate Jewish traditions in the 21st century, the idea is that, from sunset tonight through sunset tomorrow, we all should shut off our computers, televisions, cellphones, and other electronic umbilical cords, in order to “help people become more aware of their dependence on technology and not to allow it to interfere with the important things in life.”

I learned this, of course, via the Internet, where Reboot has created a Web site devoted to the cause, as well as Facebook and Twitter feeds. (Actually, to be perfectly clear, I learned about it from a friend’s Facebook status, where he posted a link to his blog, where I found the link to the organization’s Web site, www.sabbathmanifesto.org.)

At the Web site, I learned that the idea behind the National Day of Unplugging is to encourage people to slow down and “reconnect with friends, family, the community and themselves.”

Um, wait…What? [Read More...]

Another Missoulian on Wheel of Fortune this week

Another Missoula resident will appear on Wheel of Fortune this week, according to a press release I received this morning. This time, it’s Lisa Anderson, a Havre native and math teacher at Sentinel High School. Anderson tried out for the show at a “Wheelmobile” event in Missoula, where numerous other contestants were chosen and have since appeared on the show, including Missoulian food columnist Greg Patent and Huson resident Stephen Hutchings.

There’s a nice story about Anderson and her experience in the Havre Daily News; and here’s the press release with information about the airing of the show: [Read More...]

Another Montanan on Letterman tonight

Seems that David Letterman’s Montana ties are paying off once again for area musicians. Readers might recall the night a couple of years ago now when the Great Falls tribute act Cold Hard Cash appeared on the Late Show with David Letterman.

Tonight, another Montanan, Andrew Petroff, will appear on Letterman’s show as bassist in the band, Steel Magnolia. Here’s a press release I received about it. [Read More...]

Missoula resident to appear on Wheel of Fortune tonight

Following on the heels of Greg Patent’s appearance on Wheel of Fortune last month, another Missoula resident — Stephen Hutchings — will appear on the show tonight. Another local, Ken DeYoung, will appear on the show next Wednesday. I only got the press release last night, so I’m sharing it as-is. [Read More...]

We want your year-end best-of lists

It’s that time of year again, when every self-appointed critic and self-respecting media outlet looks back and ponders the best (and worst) of the year. We’re no different around here at the Missoulian. On Christmas Day, the Missoulian will publish an issue of the Entertainer devoted largely to the year in music, film, [...]
