Yours truly among Humanities Montana grant recipients

I haven’t really mentioned this publicly yet, but I guess the cat is officially out of the bag: I am embarking upon a book project to document the life and work of Drummond artist Bill Ohrmann; and this week Humanities Montana announced that I am among several folks selected to receive research grants for the coming year. I’ll be talking about this more in the future, needless to say; but for now, here is the press release announcing all of this year’s grants. [Read More...]

Artini: Facetime tonight at the Missoula Art Museum

Over the past six years, the Missoula Art Museum has worked to draw new faces into its galleries with Artini, a series of monthly events built around an ever-changing mix of artist talks, live performances, film screenings, snacks and drinks.

At this month’s event, new faces will be drawn in new ways.

On Thursday, Sept. 15, the MAM will present “Artini: Facetime,” an art auction with a twist: Each winning bidder will receive a commissioned portrait of him – or herself, to be created after the event by one of 10 participating artists. [Read More...]

Bid for boards at tonight’s On Deck auction

It’s one of the largest, most diverse and most eye-popping art shows of the year so far. And, as of press time, most of the items in this year’s On Deck skate-deck art auction hadn’t broken the $100 mark.

That’s not to say that everyone who attends this Saturday’s final auction event at [...]

Open Field Artists draw “First Breath”

Like other matters of the spirit, intuition doesn’t get much credence in American culture today. Heidi Junkersfeld knows this quite well. So when the Missoula artist speaks of the inspiration – indeed, urgency – behind the upcoming production by the performance-art troupe Open Field Artists, she chooses her words carefully.

“It really feels obvious to me that this is the time for this to happen,” she says. “I can tell you stuff about prophesies or visions; but in our culture, a lot of people view those subjects as sort of out-there. If you put those things into art that evokes rather than tells, you feel it and the audience will undoubtedly feel it, and it’s somehow safer or more acceptable to address that way.

“The arts are powerful in that way,” she continues. “That’s why I believe we need the arts – art that moves our stuff.”

If that seems rather vague, what’s clear is that plenty of stuff moves in “First Breath,” a collaborative multi-media performance that opened Thursday night at the Missoula Community Co-Op. [Read More...]

First Friday features eclectic Collector’s Resale at Dana Gallery

In the realms of art, it’s often said that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. In the art marketplace, value is often even more relative than that.

Nobody in Missoula knows this better than Tim Gordon. A nationally respected fine art appraiser, Gordon has been called upon by estates and museums around the country to assess the value of everything from paintings and sculptures to a collection of the late Princess Diana’s dresses.

While his focus is geographically, historically, and aesthetically broad, Gordon has taken a particular interest in the legacy of artists from Montana and the surrounding region, many of whom he believes are both financially and historically underappreciated in today’s art market.

So when local gallery owner Dudley Dana put out the call for his 10th annual Collector’s Resale auction, where private art collectors have the opportunity to sell works from their collections via silent auction at the Dana Gallery, Gordon decided to take the opportunity to highlight some of those neglected treasures. Monte Dolack explored Egypt’s calm before the storm

Last year, Missoula artist Monte Dolack visited Egypt, where he produced a series of beautiful paintings of the landscape he encountered. All of this happened, of course, prior to the current uprising in that country; but as we watch the chaos on television, this video of Dolack’s works might offer a reminder of [...]
