Yo La Tengo brings ‘Sounds of Science’ to Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

When the acclaimed indie-rock trio Yo La Tengo announced its current tour of the western U.S., the band cautioned fans to expect the unexpected. But when the band performs in Missoula tonight, fans know exactly what’s in store – even if relatively few of them have ever heard the music.

Taking a pause from its “Spin the Wheel” tour – where fans are treated to a first set of music that’s determined by one fan spinning a giant, wheel-of-fortune-style wheel prior to the show – Yo La Tengo hits the Wilma Theatre tonight for a two-set performance of the band’s original soundtracks to eight short documentary films by the French filmmaker Jean Painlevé. Yo La Tengo highlights Big Sky Documentary Film Festival

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival has announced the names of the 140 films selected for its 2011 festival; but the most recognizable name on this year’s bill isn’t a film at all.

On Thursday, the Missoula film festival announced that internationally acclaimed indie-rock trio Yo La Tengo will appear live in concert at this year’s BSDFF, performing live musical accompaniment to a series of documentaries by the late French filmmaker Jean Painlevé. [Read More...]

Big Sky DocFest award winners announced

A film set half a planet away has earned the top honor at this year’s Big Sky Documentary Film Festival. Chinese-Canadian director Lixin Fan’s “Last Train Home,” which chronicles the struggles of one migrant family in China as they are caught up in the desperate annual migration to return home for Chinese New Year celebrations, was named the festival’s Best Feature Film at an awards ceremony on Thursday evening at downtown social club The Loft.

Joseph Aguirre’s “Next Year Country” received the Big Sky Award, given annually to the best documentary set in the American West. Other winners included “Danza Del Viejo Inmigrante” (“The Old Immigrant’s Dance”), by Charlene Music (Best Short Film); and “Found,” by Paramita Nath (Mini-Doc Award). [Read More...]

BFD for BSDFF

The Big Sky Documentary Film Festival has announced its list of official selections for this year’s festival, which runs Feb. 12-21 at the Wilma Theatre. It’s a long and impressive list, with some new features, including a spotlight series of screenings of films by Native American filmmakers, a retrospective of films by Doug Pray, and a live musical performance accompanying an old Soviet propaganda film.

We’ll be doing a good deal of coverage in the newspaper of the festival as it gets closer; but for those who want to get a jump on the fest, here’s the press release announcing the selections and events for this year….

Dollars for docfest

News came today that Missoula’s own Big Sky Documentary Film Festival received a $10,000 grant that’ll allow them to present a new festival “sidebar” focused on Native American films. Pretty cool. Here’s the full press release…
