Adult Animation: Smetanka premieres new film tonight; don’t bring the kids

It’s a little bit late notice, but then this one probably isn’t for everyone. At the Top Hat this evening, local filmmaker and writer Andy Smetanka will present a short program of films, highlighted by the second-ever public screening of his animated ode to Missoula, “City in Shadows,” and the public premiere of another film, “The Miller’s Daughter.”

The first of those was produced during a month-long residency at the Missoula Art Museum this past spring, and features music by locals Gibson Hartwell, Lisena Brown, Hermina Harold, June West, and Smetanka.

The second one…well, that’s a little bit of a different story. [Read More...]

Artini: Facetime tonight at the Missoula Art Museum

Over the past six years, the Missoula Art Museum has worked to draw new faces into its galleries with Artini, a series of monthly events built around an ever-changing mix of artist talks, live performances, film screenings, snacks and drinks.

At this month’s event, new faces will be drawn in new ways.

On Thursday, Sept. 15, the MAM will present “Artini: Facetime,” an art auction with a twist: Each winning bidder will receive a commissioned portrait of him – or herself, to be created after the event by one of 10 participating artists. [Read More...]

Artini: Art & Soul tonight…with me!

This very evening, the Missoula Art Museum continues its monthly Artini series of events with Artini: Art and Soul. If you haven’t seen the MAM’s auction show, which is hanging now, you really should; it’s one of the best group shows I’ve ever seen at the museum, and definitely the best auction show [...]

No news is good news in Missoula’s arts scene

Last week, conductor Yannick Nézet-Séguin took the podium at the Kimmel Center in Philadelphia to lead that city’s venerable orchestra in a performance of Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart’s “Requiem.” Critics lauded the performance and the work of the French-Canadian conductor, who last summer was named the orchestra’s new music director, after a troubling period without a permanent leader.

But the program itself perhaps signaled something else about the times. [Read More...]

William Kentridge film screening at MAM this weekend

This Saturday and Sunday, the Missoula Art Museum will present a pair of advance screenings of “Anything is Possible,” a film about the South African artist William Kentridge. If you’ve never heard of him, Kentridge is a multimedia artist best known for his playful yet hauntingly beautiful animated films. Thus this film is likely to be a perfect idiom to explore his work.

Here’s a trailer for the film, and a press release about this weekend’s screenings. [Read More...]

Missoula Art Museum director weighs in on issue of tax breaks for artists

Missoula Art Musem director Laura Millin was interviewed and quoted for a story published late last week by Bloomberg News, about the seeming double-standard that applies to artists and collectors when donating artwork to museums and other charities. It’s an interesting read, and I think Millin’s point is the best example in the [...]

Angela Babby at Missoula Art Museum tonight

Artist Angela Babby will be in Missoula tonight, Thursday, Sept. 16, for the Missoula Art Museum’s monthly Artini event, where she will participate in an interview by journalist Jodi Rave at 6 p.m. Jason Heavyrunner will provide the evening’s musical backdrop, and poet Jennifer Greene of Arlee will read from her recently published book, “What Lasts.” Artini takes place from 5:30-9 p.m.; admission is free. “Wolakota,” an exhibit of artworks by Angela Babby, is on view at the Missoula Art Museum through February 6, 2011. For hours and other information, visit www.MissoulaArtMuseum.org.

Against a wall in an upstairs gallery of the Missoula Art Museum, on a medium-sized drafting table, lays an intricate puzzle of carefully cut bits of white paper. Above it, a rudimentarily colored map of the puzzle hangs on the wall, with each piece of the puzzle carefully marked by its intended color.

babbyNext to that hangs the ultimate result: a fluid image of bare, dark branches against an undulating background of stones in snow, the whole thing pieced together out of hand-cut bits of enameled mosaic glass – 1,000 pieces or more, some as small as a fingernail, none bigger than a serving spoon — affixed inside a wooden frame.

The tableaux offers a testament to the process by which Billings artist Angela Babby transforms plain sheets of colored glass into painterly images that seem to transcend, even defy, the painstaking method of their creation. [Read More...]

Meet me at Artini, weenie

I’m particularly stoked about this week’s Artini, as it’ll be my first focused look at the art featured in this year’s 38th Benefit Art Auction as well as this year’s Artini auction. Should be a fun night, hope to see you there….

Meet me at Artini, weenie

Oh, I don’t really think you’re a weenie. It just rhymed. And I figgered it might catch your eye, since I’m hoping there’ll be a crowd at this month’s Artini event at the Missoula Art Museum…I’m on their “Artini young professional committee,” which I think is hilarious, since I’m hardly professional and definitely not young. I noticed the other day they haven’t put me on the official committee list on their Web site, so maybe I’m like the stealth oldster or something. Anyway, here’s the tantalizing details… [Read More...]

Paint your undies!

The Missoula Art Museum has put out a call for artists for this year’s Artini auction, which takes place in February of 2010. (For those like me who haven’t yet wrapped their minds around this, 2010 comes in just about a month!?!)

As seems to be the case every year, they’ve changed things up for the Artini auction. Last year it was the whole “Artini: In Your Face” thing, which I covered live. This year, the theme is wearable or otherwise functional art.

Here’s the art call; the deadline for submissions from artists is Dec. 1. [Read More...]
