Steve Martin and band coming to Missoula

The Father of the Bride is now the leader of the band, and he is coming to Missoula this summer.

On Thursday, the Missoula Osprey announced that legendary comedian Steve Martin will bring his band, the Steep Canyon Rangers, to Missoula’s Ogren Park at Allegiance Field for a concert on July 20. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 30, at 10 a.m.

Best-known for his acting roles in such comedies as “The Jerk,” “Father of the Bride,” and “Roxanne,” Martin has seen his lifelong love for the banjo blossom into a late career. His band’s 2009 album, “The Crow: New Songs for the Five String Banjo,” won the 2010 Grammy Award for Best Bluegrass Album. The record featured guest performances by such stars as Dolly Parton, Vince Gill, Earl Scruggs, and Tim O’Brien. [Read More...]

Mellencamp, Dylan rock Missoula

On Tuesday night, as the setting sun shimmered meekly through a blanket of grey clouds that lay over the Missoula valley, Stephen Hoffman of Coeur d’Alene stood halfway between second and third base at Ogren Park, tilting toward center field as he listened intently to John Mellencamp singing a solo acoustic version of “Save Some Time to Dream,” off his brand new album, “No Better Than This.”

“Yeah,” breathed Hoffman at the song’s end. “That was awesome. Wow. Good song.”

The same, presumably, didn’t cross the mind of the four men who stood in a knot next to him, two of them discussing their favorite Bob Dylan songs as a third barked a beer order into his cell phone.

Such was the scene at Tuesday night’s double-bill Mellencamp/Dylan concert, the largest in Missoula since the Rolling Stones rocked Washington Grizzly Stadium four years ago. With a crowd of more than 6,000 in attendance, the two legendary performers gave their fans – who seemed to comprise roughly equal factions in the ballpark – plenty of old favorites and a few curve balls over the course of the evening. Mellencamp/Dylan and Black Crowes: Tickets still available

With the first eight months of the current year almost gone, the number of household-name concert headliners in Missoula can still be counted on one finger. By the end of next week, we’ll almost reach a handful.

Crammed into the final days of August and the first day of September, Missoula is playing host to a sudden string of big-name acts: The Beach Boys (last night, at Ogren Park), John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan (next Tuesday, also at Ogren Park), and the Black Crowes (next Wednesday, at Ryan Creek Meadows, 30 miles east of town).

Yet it appears that our unusually paltry season of big-name shows hasn’t spawned overwhelming demand for those concerts. As of press time Thursday – just hours before the Beach Boys concert was set to begin — tickets to all three concerts remained available, with numerous tickets to last night’s concert still available and thousands of tickets still available to both of next week’s concerts.
