Concerts return to Big Sky Brewing Company

Concerts are once again on tap at the Big Sky Brewing Company. Earlier this week, Knitting Factory Entertainment of Boise, Idaho, announced the first in what’s expected to be a series of concerts this summer on the back lot of the Missoula brewery.

The concert, which will feature Ray LaMontagne and the Pariah Dogs, Brandi Carlile, and the Secret Sisters, will take place June 20. Tickets go on sale Friday, March 4, at 10 a.m.

The announcement means that Big Sky Brewing Company, which hosted several major concerts during the summers of 2004 and 2005, is back in the concert business – and this time, it’s hopefully for good, said Big Sky Brewing Company president Neal Leathers. [Read More...]

Black Crowes concert at Ryan Creek Meadows canceled after sound equipment “fried”

Fans of southern rock band The Black Crowes were left crowing their disappointment on Wednesday night after the band’s concert at Ryan Creek Meadows was abruptly canceled, more than an hour after its scheduled start-time.

The band, which had scheduled the outdoor concert east of Missoula as part of its ongoing farewell tour, was unable to perform after a driving rain “fried” both the main mixing console and power amplifiers at the concert – leaving the venue scrambling to explain the situation to the more than 1,000 people in attendance, said Ryan Creek Meadows co-owner Keli Hansen. Black Crowes a no-show

It’s too late at night to accomplish any solid reporting on this, so I’ll be following up Thursday; but it appears from multiple sources including the Facebook feed from Ryan Creek Meadows that the Black Crowes never took the stage for their long-anticipated Wednesday night gig at the outdoor venue east of Missoula.

Mellencamp/Dylan and Black Crowes: Tickets still available

With the first eight months of the current year almost gone, the number of household-name concert headliners in Missoula can still be counted on one finger. By the end of next week, we’ll almost reach a handful.

Crammed into the final days of August and the first day of September, Missoula is playing host to a sudden string of big-name acts: The Beach Boys (last night, at Ogren Park), John Mellencamp and Bob Dylan (next Tuesday, also at Ogren Park), and the Black Crowes (next Wednesday, at Ryan Creek Meadows, 30 miles east of town).

Yet it appears that our unusually paltry season of big-name shows hasn’t spawned overwhelming demand for those concerts. As of press time Thursday – just hours before the Beach Boys concert was set to begin — tickets to all three concerts remained available, with numerous tickets to last night’s concert still available and thousands of tickets still available to both of next week’s concerts. Unconfirmed, but intriguing: Black Crowes coming to Missoula?

Official word has not come down about this, and Ryan Creek Meadows owner Toby Hansen declined to comment, but check out this listing at Pollstar, which says the Black Crowes are scheduled to perform at Ryan Creek Meadows September 1. I gotta run for today but will check into it more on Friday.

Yell fire! in a crowded theatre: Franti to return for two-night engagement at Wilma

Peace-lovin’ rap-rock-reggaemon Michael Franti has announced a return to Missoula — this time for a two-night stint at the Wilma Theatre in August. Kinda surprising he’s not headed to Ryan Creek Meadows, the outdoor site where he played a late-season concert last autumn; but fans should be pleased at the opportunity for a two-night stand. Here’s the press release: [Read More...]

Slightly Stoopid to open Ryan Creek Meadows summer season

This time, it’s no hoax: Slightly Stoopid will kick off a summer series of concerts at Ryan Creek Meadows east of Missoula with a June 22 performance.

The band, which was one of three acts mentioned in an elaborately orchestrated hoax announcement of a free downtown concert this spring, will perform an outdoor concert as part of its “Causin Vapors…Legalize It” tour – announced, not coincidentally, on April 20, the unofficial holiday of marijuana legalization advocates. Michael Franti at Ryan Creek Meadows: a review

Less than a minute into his 90-minute concert on Wednesday night, Michael Franti looked out across a sea of pogoing dancers in the audience, stepped up to the microphone, and let out a long, one-word shout: “Montana!” The crowd went wild, cheering back at the dreadlocked singer. Two more times during the song, Franti called out the state’s name; two more times, the crowd went nuts.

It’s a tried-and-true trick for touring performers to connect with local audiences that way. But in this case, Franti’s call seemed to carry a special reverberance — a shout-out to the mountains that echoed around him and the bare earth underfoot at this, the second-ever concert at Ryan Creek Meadows, a makeshift outdoor venue located near Beavertail Hill State Park in western Montana.
