“Yell Fire” in a crowded (Wilma) Theatre: Michael Franti returning to Missoula

Okay, don’t really do that. But plenty of fans will at least be yelping with joy that Michael Franti will be returning to the Wilma with his band, Spearhead, for another two-date engagement at the end of August. Here are the details from the show’s promoter: [Read More...]

Girl Talk changes Missoula concert date

I received word this morning that mish-mash artist Girl Talk has changed the date of his upcoming Missoula date at the Wilma Theatre. The concert is now scheduled for May 29 — a day earlier than previously announced. Tickets purchased for May 30 will still be honored, there’s no need to exchange them. No word from the promoter as to whether they’ll offer refunds to anyone who can’t make it on the new date; but their contact info is below in the press release announcing the new date:

Get down with the Clown: Insane Clown Posse coming to Missoula’s Wilma Theatre

Okay, this should be something to witness (or, not). Insane Clown Posse — a Detroit hip-hop duo known equally for its crazy costumes and crazier antics — is coming to the Wilma Theatre. Once deemed offensive “not for their obscenity, but for their stupidity” by Spin Magazine, the duo nonetheless has amassed a devoted following of so-called “Juggalos,” selling millions of copies of their records along the way.

No guitars, just virtuoso dance music when Skrillex hits the Wilma Theatre

At the end of electronic musician Skrillex’s pummeling dance throb, “Rock and Roll (Will Take You To the Mountain),” a whining voice barks out, “You have technicians here making noise. No-one is a musician, they’re not artists because nobody can play the guitar.” It’s one of the few intelligible phrases in the song – or, for that matter, on Skrillex’s entire recent EP, “Scary Monsters and Nice Sprites.”

If your definition of musicianship demands proficiency on the guitar – or any other instrument that existed prior to about 2005 – then next week’s local concert by Skrillex and a handful of other dance-music producers of his ilk probably won’t turn your crank.

But if your mind is open to new definitions of music in this new millennium, then get down to the Wilma on Wednesday to hear one of today’s trickiest electronic-music trailblazers crank up the jams. [Read More...]
